Birds Birds Birds

Once again, I went for my walk on Monday morning around 10 AM down by the Trinity river. I have come to really enjoy my weekly walk along the Trinity. It reduces any stressors that I have about the week ahead and reminds me that there is more to life than textbooks and tests. It is especially nice to see how many people have found the same experience to be uplifting. Every time I walk the trail there are always people riding bikes, running, or just walking and enjoying the scenery. It is an extremely peaceful area to spend time in the mornings and it sure does brighten my week.

I walked for about an hour, hoping that I would come across some wildlife that I had not yet seen before.  For quite some time, I could only see the same birds, fish, and turtles that I had already seen down at the river previously. I snapped a few additional photos, as seen below, of the several white herons I saw perched around the water. As I continued walking, I eventually saw this massive blue bird fly down by the water and land in a tree across the river. It was astonishingly large – it made the white herons look small. I tried to get a photo of the bird but unfortunately it was perched in the shadows, making it rather difficult to get a good view.

The bird looks somewhat similar to a great blue heron – large size, blue feathers, and a bright orange beak. I have seen a few great blue herons before but perched along the water, never in flight. It was truly amazing how large this bird’s wingspan was, it caught my eye immediately. Although it took quite a while this week to catch a glimpse of new wildlife, it was well worth the wait. I will never be disappointed in having to spend more time outside – that is a homework assignment I will enjoy doing for the rest of my life.

  2. I, too, saw this bird (or one identical to it) the other day when I was on the Trinity! He must be the river's mascot. I was unsure whether it was a heron or an egret, as I am not a birdwatcher.

  3. I think it's probably a Great Blue, one of my favorite birds. I am forever trying to get good photos of them but so far have never gotten a really quality photo, and mine are always at a distance. A couple weeks I ago was silently floating along the West Fort by the Nature Center and came upon one, but I could only get a shot of his back, and he took off as soon as he heard my camera shutter click. They are apprehensive around humans, as they should be. Thanks for posting. I hope you see another.
