Blog Post 1 - A Walk in the Neighborhood
On Tuesday, August 25th I took a short, thirty minute walk around my neighborhood to see if I could find a topic for my weekly blog post. While many of the prompts online involve animals, plants or other forms of nature, I wouldn't necessarily say these things were abundant on my walk. There were trees, grass, and small forms of shrubbery but no exciting plants or animals from what I could tell. What I did notice, however, was the amount of trash, cups and cans that were sprinkled throughout my neighborhood.
What is interesting about this is that if I wasn't intentionally looking for trash I most likely wouldn't have noticed just how much there actually was. While I was on my walk, I stepped on a broken glass bottle on the sidewalk and that was what initially caught my eye. I looked up from the broken glass and started to wonder if there was anything else lying around that could potentially be harmful to pedestrians, and that was when I noticed the cans. I finished my walk looking for other types of trash that I could take photos of and then eventually clean up myself.
Throughout this walk, I learned that trash is literally everywhere if you take the time to look for it. I drive past this street every day, for one reason or another, and have never noticed just how dirty it really is. It wasn't until I stopped and took the time to think about what it is doing to the surrounding environment that I finally noticed its presence. While I may not have seen everything I wanted on this "nature" filled walk, I found what I don't want to see the next time I set out on one.
Thanks for posting. Great post on your new awareness. Litter is of paramount concern to environmentalists, and it's quite true that we become numb and blind to most of it.
